The Infamous Tower of Pisa.
It really leans.
And....they still let people tour inside and climb.
This appears as yet another example of things that would NEVER happen in the U.S.....Too many potential lawsuits regarding structural soundness. The construction of the bell tower began in 1173 on unstable marshy acreage, and its builders knew it was leaning by the third story. Over the next 800 years, various 'builders' tried to correct its imperfections by shortening its uphill side as they added each level, but to no avail. Today it stands a full 5 meters off perpendicular. The other structures in the piazza are sinking as well.
On this particular day of our Italian excursion, my kids were anxious to get to the beach, so we opted out of the tour and took the required photos of trying to 'right it'.
The clouds were gathering, precious sunlight disappearing, the sand beckoning.
So we made our way to the beach, wiggled into swimsuits and dipped toes into the Mediterranean.
These guys played all afternoon. You would think they were sun-starved or something.
The clouds dripped a few minutes of giant drops and the whipping winds drove away ALL the other tourists.
We were the lone holdouts.
The dad breathed.
We drank in the day.
