The Splendor of Versailles

Over the top.

On this day, I continually had to keep reminding my mouth to close.  Awed and speechless was I.

What do you know about Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette, and 18th century France?  In a word, they were uber privileged royalty. Today we cannot even begin to fathom their wealth.  They built Versailles while the rest of France starved.  And, in a nutshell,  provoked the country into the French Revolution.

Versailles is a MASSIVE estate. The journey from one end to the other took all day.  We had about 7 hours and only saw a small fraction.

But one example of countless rooms similar to this one.  They all seemed to have a purpose, though.

The famed Hall of Mirrors.  A grand ballroom the size of a football field hung with incredible chandeliers, its windows overlooked the grounds and juxtaposed from those, mirrors reflected the sunlight.  Now picture hundreds of servants in formation down both walls, ready to satisfy every whim.

I took this shot to help you see the immensity of all of the art in this palace.  Impossible to truly process ALL the pieces in each room.

Louis' bed.  I needed the picture because it looks just like mine.

The back of Versailles.  We gave up looking for the screen door.

The back yard.

And to think, this will be bottom basement living compared to Heaven!!!
