Lesson from a Run

Went out for a run yesterday.  Didn't want to....... It was cold and rainy-ish.....again (unlike the story these pictures of where I run tell you).  The last couple of days we've been back to the 'ol' stand-by' weather of cloudy and chilly.  Having come off of 2+ weeks of absolute gorgeousness, I had no desire to even be outside, much less trying to conquer the rolling hills of the running paths.  But I hadn't been in a week and this 5K is knocking on my door and since I've committed to it......had to go......

Wow!....I was able to go farther without tiring than I ever have up this point....amazing!  I love having the Ipod along to take my mind off of the actual running part.  Truly, it saves me from thinking about what I'm doing.  I can lose myself in a song and before I know, the song's over and it's on to the next one.  Yesterday, I was on the return loop, and I had just thought.."Wow, I feel pretty good for being almost done...that's surprising!"  Then....one of my earpieces fell out............I could suddenly hear my very loud panting, and the pounding of my feet.......and then suddenly my legs were tired too and my lungs were burning.....etc....etc..  And then I looked at the next hill and thought, "Oh man!  I'm really tired!"

Hmmmmm....

Why is it when my ears and head are filled (I like my Ipod loud by the way) with something else, and my mind is taken somewhere else, does my run seem somehow easier???  And the Lord spoke to me and said, "You know..... this is what life with Me is like too!  As long as you're keeping your ears (and consequently your head) tuned in to ME, you're not focused on....you.  You feel better, and your path is easier."

A verse comes to mind:

      "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;
        In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight."
                                                                               Proverbs 3:5-6

Having grown up with this verse, I'd always pictured a 'twisty windy' path (and believe me you don't know 'twisty windy' until you've traveled in the German countryside) that He would make straight.  But now I'm thinking maybe He's talking about making my path LEVEL!  I think the rolling hills that I run in have really made me much stronger, much faster in the last few weeks of 'training' than a level path would have.  Funny that I don't really even think about them any more.  And, along those same lines, keeping my head 'tuned in' to Him and trusting Him, makes my day-to-day 'path' called my life seem more level!!!!

Lord, I'm  seriously needing some 'spiritual duct tape' to keep Your earbuds securely plugged in my ears!!!!
